Chamonix, France.

1035 meters (3400ft) above sea level the small town of Chamonix boasts incredible mountainscapes, ice caves and a skiers paradise.

The people are friendly and the pastries are crumbly. For the most part everyone we met had a moderate quantity of English that dwarfed our French.

Our French was not only limited but also useless. I couldn't for the life of me find an opportunity to point out that "The carrot is on the table" or that "The dog is in the garden"... Maybe I should of concentrated more at school.

Luckily for us, you don't need any French to enjoy the magnificent views and natural beauty that the Alps have to offer.

Aside from skiing we also visited the 'Mer de glace' ice cave which is a short cable car ride and 430 steps down the snow covered valley into a translucent tunnel that is almost glowing with the sunlight. The tunnel has to be dug out every summer as the glacier moves around 70 meters every year.

In the walls of the cave are rocks and other natural debris partially exposed which I can only imagine have been there for a considerable number of years.

I can strongly recommend visiting Chamonix for skiers, hikers and nature lovers. I'm sure that I will return in the years to come.
