I love having to adapt to a situation that has never come up before. Shooting in a gym is a very interesting one because it's not set up for flattering lighting and the scenes are usually dull and boring. Lucky for me this particular gym has a great look with the exposed brickwork, roughly rendered flooring and some very battered looking punch bags.
At the beginning of the shoot there were some issues with the limitation of not having any studio lighting. This was a restriction that the gym had outlined; I imagine as to not disrupt the other users of the gym too greatly. This proved at first a little frustrating as the model had some ideas of what she wanted to get from the shoot. Some of this imagery required studio lighting with a flash soft box. Regardless, we had just the camera and the environment to work with and we did our best.

I did experience further issues throughout the shoot with getting the images tack sharp. I'm not certain if this is caused by the the low lighting or maybe the lens but I eventually moved over to manual focus. Having such a shallow D.o.P meant that even the slightest adjustment of the focus made a huge difference to the resulting image made worse by the fact that D.o.P. preview is not available with such a large aperture. Eventually I resorted to very gradual manual focus bracketing to make sure I had something with the right focus. This was not a such an issue as the model was, for the most part, posing. If I was trying to capture motion then another solution would be required.

It always takes time for the model to relax especially when shooting in a public space.
In the beginning the camera feels very invasive and one of the reasons I like to shoot candid photographs is because the person in question closes up the moment the lens cap is off.
After a while once the model has started to relax you can start to capture better imagery. This image was towards the end of the hour-and-a-bit shoot and I think that comes out in the very natural look.
