cambridge

Cambridge. December 31st 2018. Tonights plans: In bed by 9 o'clock.

It's been 2 years since I visited Cambridge and it really felt like yesterday.

Not much has changed in the historic city. Students still walk the streets in black gowns. The university chapel still dominates the river bank. Punting is still popular as ever.

Last time I visited I was a passenger in the punt and for the most part the same can be said for this visit. At some point however I was asked if I'd like to have a go. The answer was of course "I quite like being 'in' the vessel and being 'on' the vessel seems one step closer to being in the river." Nevertheless, The Mrs and I had a go and I can honestly say I was terrified...

Punts are very narrow and the punter (person navigating) has total control over the balance. If they want to 'rock the boat' so to speak - they will, and there's nothing you can do but hold on for dear life.

That being said, you must try it and if you're not feeling adventurous enough to do a private hire and have a go, guided hire with a tour guide is also an option.

my pick

This time of year there is a fair on known simply as 'Cambridge Winter Fair' as far as I know. After doing photography on and off over the years I really feel that I've found my core interest in portraiture, particularly in interesting lighting conditions at night. The colours found at a fun fair are amazing and there is a lot you can do creatively.
