First of all I have to say that I am thrilled to kick off the new year with a post containing images shot on film! After all the initial stress I've had in the build up to shooting my first reel of film in years, it's finally out.

This reel of Agfa Vista Plus 200 was shot over a number of months during my stay in Taiwan and once I returned to cold dark London.

There's something very thrilling about seeing the photo's you took so long ago for the first time. There are definitely a few I shot in the early days of this particular reel that I'd forgotten about until now.

takeaway

This film seems to do very well in natural light or brightly lit environments. The best example of that would have to be the bulldog in the coffee shop as seen on the left. Compared to the rest of the photographs the colour is just amazing.

On the flip-side, this film seems to struggle in very warm artificially lit conditions as seen in the image of 'serving dinner'.

The grain of the ISO200 is very minor and does not distract from the content. I must say that a little grain has never bothered me. I think it adds to the image.

It seems to me that although 35mm film might not be able to reproduce the equivalent

megapixel quality of todays digital cameras, the grain/noise seems different to me.

In my experience a digital camera seems to produce this RGB type noise that simply makes the image look of a poor quality whereas the grain of 35mm film has a different quality to it. Maybe I'm biased but I will definitely do a post in the future comparing the two types of grain/noise to see if they do look different and why.

In the meantime have a great 2019 and get ready for a year packed with posts and tutorials...

my pick

This portrait of my lady is a bit of a success story for me. I have had so many problems with exposure and getting the focus just right in the past and you can imagine taking a photo that you can't see for over a month can be nail biting.

I could tell everything was right in scene, the composition was good and I'd captured the moment without a blink but only time would tell. Very pleased!
